Hyaluronic acid filler changes the shape and volume of the lips, redefines their outline and softens fine lines on the skin above the lip, for fuller or better-hydrated lips. It is carried out at the practice in Cannes, after an anaesthetic cream combined with ice or local anaesthesia, with no social downtime. The amount injected ranges from 0.2 to more than 1 cc depending on the plan. The result is final in 3 to 4 days and lasts 6 to 12 months; subsequent sessions require smaller doses.
Price: €350; the consultation before the injection is free.
Hyaluronic acid or lip fat transfer?
| Hyaluronic acid | Fat transfer (micro-lipostructure) | |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Resorbable gel | The patient’s own fat |
| Setting | Practice | Operating theatre (Clinique Oxford) |
| Precision of the result | Dose adjusted precisely, from 0.2 to more than 1 cc | Less predictable: 30 to 50% of the fat is reabsorbed |
| Social downtime | None | 0 to 7 days |
| Duration of result | 6 to 12 months | Long-lasting once the graft has taken |
| Price | €350 | On quotation |
Dr Médard de Chardon prefers hyaluronic acid for the lips: the reabsorption of fat makes the result less precise.
Which parts of the lips can be treated?
- The skin above the lip (“white lip”): the vertical fine lines above the lip (smoker’s or “sunburst” lines).
- Cupid’s bow: the arch-shaped contour in the centre of the upper lip.
- The outline: the border between the red part of the lip and the skin, to redefine the lip line.
- The red part of the lip (vermilion): volume, plumping or hydration.
Each treatment is tailored to the patient: the lips can be redefined without being inflated, an asymmetry corrected, or the lips simply hydrated.
All areas
Four areas, treated alone or together depending on your goals. Tap an area to show it on its own.
Which products are used?
CE-marked hyaluronic acids, chosen according to the goal: Restylane (Galderma) or Juvéderm (Allergan) to plump; more fluid formulations, including skin boosters, to hydrate.
Needle or cannula?
The injection is given with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula. The needle allows injection into the dermis, for fine lines and precise definition of the outline; the cannula limits bruising, but does not allow such effective injection. See needle or cannula on the hyaluronic acid page.
Before: thin lips, fine lines above the upper lip.
Is lip filler painful?
It is only very slightly painful: an anaesthetic cream is combined with ice, or a local anaesthetic with lidocaine is given at the nerves of the upper and lower lip (infraorbital and mental nerve block).
How can bruising be avoided?
- stop aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs 10 days before the injection;
- apply ice before and during the injection;
- inject slowly;
- apply an arnica cream after the injection (not scientifically proven).
How does a lip filler treatment work?
- ConsultationFree before the injection, at the practice, 101 rue d’Antibes in Cannes: analysis of the lips and smile, choice of areas, product and quantity.
- SessionAt the practice, in 15 to 45 minutes, after the anaesthetic cream and ice or local anaesthesia; injection with a needle or cannula, from 0.2 to more than 1 cc.
- Touch-upPossible from day 7, free if there is an imperfection.
What is the recovery like?
- Slight swelling just after the injection, which increases for 2 days and then subsides.
- Bruising, not systematic, for a few days.
- Social life: no social downtime.
- Final result in 3 to 4 days.
- Duration of effect: 6 to 12 months; subsequent sessions require smaller doses.
Where will you be?
14 days after the session
What are the risks?
The most common side effects are temporary bruising and swelling. More rarely: small irregularities or nodules, asymmetry, an inflammatory reaction or infection. In exceptional cases, the product can block a blood vessel; this is an emergency, treated by injecting hyaluronidase, which dissolves hyaluronic acid and can also be used to correct a result you are not happy with.
Contraindications: pregnancy and breastfeeding, an active skin infection in the area (including a cold sore), certain autoimmune diseases.
Choosing a qualified, experienced and reputable surgeon reduces these risks, and can even eliminate some of them.

Frequently asked questions about lip filler
How long does lip filler last?
The effect lasts 6 to 12 months. The product is gradually absorbed; maintenance sessions require smaller doses.
Will the result of lip filler look natural?
Yes, if the dose and the area are suited to the face. The outline can be redefined without inflating the lips, or the lips plumped slightly; the quantity ranges from 0.2 to more than 1 cc.
Is lip filler painful?
Very little: an anaesthetic cream combined with ice, or a local anaesthetic of the lip nerves, makes the session very bearable.
How long does the swelling last after lip filler?
It increases for the 2 days following the injection and then subsides; the final result can be judged after 3 to 4 days.
Can the result of lip filler be corrected?
Yes. A touch-up is possible from day 7, free if there is an imperfection. A result you are not happy with can also be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
